In steel engravings after the most famous and most beautiful paintings in the great collections as the Dresden Gallery, the Pinakothek in Munich, the Berlin Museums, the Belvedere and several others. – Throughout with overwhelmingly English-German parallel designation. – Mostly only weak foxing here and there in the white margins not expressly mentioned in every case.

To shorten download time this very large page has been devided into several parts. As the artists nevertheless are sorted according to their respective year of birth some may not appear in the century they are known for artistically but in the previous.

Correggio “was most tempted by those things that should reflect the charm of a beautiful sensuous appearance, an idyllic atmosphere”. Such a work is his “Magdalen”.

“World-famous is Correggio’s Night which had become subject for novellas and poetries. The amazing and the eyes-enchanting in this painting is the gradation from highest light to the deepest darkness.” (Nagler). By the way exemplary for Nagler’s general annotation to Correggio “The grace of his youthful figures and heads as characteristic of him has a large similarity to that pet physiognomy of the da Vinci … so that the presumption will be probable, Corregio’s first sensation for this special attribute of the rosy youth in the nature” has been nurtured by this.
