With  Quality  Seal  of  Prime  Degree

Maes, Dirk (1659 Haarlem 1717). Horse with Rider. In riding school attitude stepping to the right with the raised crop in the right. Etching by August Friedrich Winkler (Geyer/Saxony 1770 – 1807). Inscribed: A. F. Winkler f. / Theodor Maas (in reverse). 23.2 x 18.5 cm.

Provenance

Printroom of the Royal Museums Berlin

with  both  their  collection  (Lugt 1606)  +  disposal  stamp  verso .

From Winkler’s 11-sheet set after drawings/etchings of Netherlandish masters ( “These sheets are treated very brilliantly”, Nagler). Here then, especially effective, after Maes whose “excellent horse drawings (numerously in the British Museum) (are) often attributed to Wouwerman” (Bernt). As Nagler attests Winkler himself “drew horses and battle pieces masterly with the pen”. The great Rossmässler in Tharandt etched after those, perhaps after the Studies for Horse Draughtsmen published posthumously in 1810. – On buff paper untrimmed on two sides with margins 2-8 cm wide.

“ Stumbled upon your excellent website while researching Ludwig Beckmann, and must say that I was most impressed. In any case, since you are the closest I know to an authority on antique German books and prints I am wondering if you could help me pinpoint the origin of a piece I have in my dachshund collection … ”
