“ Seleucus I Nicator (365-281 B.C.), son of Antiochus … (took part) in Alexander the Great’s conquest as one of the leaders of the phalanx … conquered (later) all Iran, advanced in India up to the Ganges and accepted the title of king in 306. By his decisive participation in the victory at Ipsus (301) he acquired Syria, Armenia, Mesopotamia, a part of Cappodicia, and Cilicia … Since his empire included

almost  all  of  the  territory  conquered  by  Alexander  the  Great  in  Asia .

But already (sic! aged 84, sic!) in 281 he was killed, when he just prepared for a campaign against Macedonia, by the hand of one of his courtiers … Conquest-maniac as all of Alexander the Great’s generals S. yet had the virtues of a good regent … and promoted art and sciences … ”
