Berlin – Gaertner, Johann Philipp Eduard (?, 1801 Berlin 1877). The Royal Theatre together with the German Cathedral. On the Gendarmenmarkt carriage and figure accessories, i. a. women with perambulator. Heliogravure. Lower right inscribed in writing: E. Gaertner. 9.5 x 13.2 cm.
Gaertner “painted … in Berlin especially architectural representations in which perspective and lights are to be praised” (Nagler IV, p. 551). And, Monogramists II, 1589: “… from 1827 on he founded his fame in Berlin. Gärtner’s works are numerous, and rank with the best products of paintings of buildings.” – Contrary to the inscription here on his larger sized steel engraving of the sujet Barber designates Heinrich Hintze (1800 Berlin – before 1862) as draughtsman, what may be, however, an error of Barber’s for “To the steel engravings for S. H. Spiker’s work ‘Berlin and its Environs’ (1833) H. has contributed 16 leaves drawings, beside Gärtner the most”. (Thieme-Becker, Hintze, XVII, 119 f.). – On light, wide-margined cardboard. At the back at the upper and lower margin traces of former mounting.
