JOSEPH GEORG WINTTER
1751 Munich 1789
Electorate Palatinate Bavarian
Court and Hunting Engraver
whose delicate and demanding drawings and water-colours
– more numerous than his only just about 137 mostly smaller etchings –
need great experience .
The contemporary Wilhelm Gottfried von Moser 1788 about Wintter :
“ The drawing is fine, the engraving well ,
always better than Riedinger (sic!) ”
(Forst-Archiv vol. IV).
And 1851 Dr. G. K. Nagler wrote in his Künstler-Lexikcon :
“ Winter appears in these drawings in a very advantageous way ,
since they are done quite as beautiful as witty .
His etchings are excellent, too ,
and stand in their treatment between those by Hollar and Riedinger (sic!) . ”

art-historical contributions and annotations
… and don’t miss the website of Johann Elias Ridinger as Wintter’s great predecessor!
