Today the “Rediscovered American Etcher”
Parrish, Stephen Windsor (Philadelphia 1846 – Cornish, New Hampshire, 1938). Low tide at the bay of a flat, sparsely overgrown coast opening to the right, dominated to the left by a large dark rock. Small stage reaching into the bay, beyond a property. Etching printed in brown over an ochre tone plate. C. 1880. Only in the age of 31 Parrish, pupil of i. a. Peter Moran and father of Frederick Maxfield P., finally turned to the arts, “like a duck to water”, so he himself years later. Just about the time when America’s artists discovered the art of etching for themselves:
“ Even America has a small prehistory of modern art of etching. In the 80s and 90s of the previous century there was a promising heyday … a number of names appear the collector has to watch and which he may pay attention to if he comes across.
“ Almost only pure landscape works come into question … I would like to mention further … Stephen Parrish … All these stand the comparison with their European colleagues ”
(Singer).
During the following 11 years Parrish worked especially landscapes and marine views of the American Northeast and Canada as well as of England and France:
“ Parrish quickly found his best subject matter in the landscape of Eastern North America, particularly the harbors and villages of New England and Canada. As a leading critic wrote in 1883: ‘Mr. Stephen Parrish, whom I should put … in the very first rank of our … etchers, and who is the most popular of them all … is especially associated with seaboard scenes. Our ragged fisher-villages, with their rocky foundations and primitive vessels, have found in him a first and most clear-voiced interpreter’. ”
So the introduction to the 1999 rediscovery exhibition “Stephen Parrish: Rediscovered American Etcher” in the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia. – On toned strong laid paper.
