Johann Elias Ridinger (Ulm 1698 – Augsburg 1767). Dains mouchetés. Speckled Fallow Deer. “A splendid group (of 6) fallow deer in unsurpassably fine (oak) forest.” Two stags, one resting to the right, the other grazing to the left (this adopted in reversed position as Fallow Deer Speckled Red and Brown in the Colored Animal Kingdom), three deer, resting, standing & going, and a pert little calf. Etching and engraving. (1736.) Inscribed: 17. / Cum Priv. Sac. Cæs. Majest. / I. El. Ridinger inv. pinx. Sculps. et excud. Aug. Vind., otherwise as above in German, French, Latin, & below. 13⅝ × 16½ in (34.6 × 42 cm).

Thienemann + Schwarz 212. – Sheet 17 of the Study of the Wild Animals with the caption of the Hamburg pope of poets, jurist & senator, yet foremost friend of Ridinger’s, Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680-1747), in German. – Margins 2.5-4 cm wide. – In the center of the 3 cm white lower margin tear up to the platemark backed acid-freely with old trace of adhesive tape shining through. – Painterly-fine sheet in shining marvelous impression of ultimate beauty as in such quality rare since old.
